The Great Commission
“Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28 16-20, KJV
Greetings, and Welcome!
Why Jesus? Specifically, who is He? Both of these questions are perfectly reasonable, deserving to be answered. First off, please be assured God loves you; after all, He created youin His image.
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Genesis 1:26-27, KJV
“Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the bellyI knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” Jeremiah 1:4-5, KJV
“For thou hast possessed my reins:
thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Psalm 139:13-14, KJV
“But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter;
and we all are the work of thy hand.” Isaiah 64:8, KJV
Does it make sense if God created you (and me), He must know everything about us? Consider the artist who creates a brilliant masterpiece; does he not enjoy it, taking pleasure in what his hands have created? Of course, yes. Likewise, it is God who has created us for His pleasure; so clearly, He loves us. Scripture upholds His perfect love for all creation. Isn’t this truly marvelous! The Creator God of the universe loves ____________________________________________ (insert your name)!
Simply stated, Jesus Christis the Son of God, through whom all things were created, and by whom, the universe continues to exist. All His creation, along with the Holy Bible, God’s written word to us, singularly, and consistently, upholds the name of Jesus; the only true and living Word.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
John 1:1-5, KJV
Let’s examine two common passages of Scripture, both recorded by the Apostle John.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” John 3:16-17, KJV
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”John 3:36, KJV
The Apostle John, who walked with, and was taught directly by Jesus over a period of about (3) years, records;
- God loves the word He has created.
- Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God (born as a human baby).
- We are saved from judgment through belief and faith in Jesus.
- Jesus came save us, not condemn us for breaking God’s commandments; this is our sinful nature.
- Everlasting and eternal life is open to anyone who believes in Jesus.
- Everyone choosing to reject Jesus has the full wrath of God upon them, destined for eternity in hell.
” Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” Psalm 8, KJV
The Psalmist David wrote these words; how God created humans to be a bit lower than the angels in Heaven. Only a loving God with infinite patience and care would do this; we are truly are a blessed creation!
Ok, God loves me; where does Jesus come in? I am so pleased you asked! Here is the problem. God created a perfect, ideal, and sinless world; however, Adam and Eve disobeyed God, eating of the forbidden fruit. This is perhaps the saddest moment of all human history, whereby sin first entered into our world. The Apostle Paul wrote these words so that we would know and understand the truth; “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”Romans 5:12, KJV
Up until this point there was no death; animals did not die naturally, no creature ate another for food, everything was absolutely perfect; Adam and Eve, and all their descendants would have lived forever. This is the real reason we have wars, strife, murders, disease, anger, pain, suffering….and on it goes; all because Adam and Eve willingly chose to disobey God– this is the simplest definition of SIN!
Blessedly there is good news; let’s continue on!
“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” Romans 5:6-11, KJV
A careful and plain reading of this passage of Scripture tells us;
- Jesus Christ died (on the cross) for the ungodly (you and me!).
- God allowed this to happen (actually, He planned for it), out of His perfect love for us.
- We are justified (made “right” in the eyes of God).
- Previously, we were enemies of God.
- Now, we can be reconciled to God, because we have been forgiven!
Stated simply, God has provided a way for us to be forgiven of our sins, through faith and belief in His Son, JESUS CHRIST. Yes, the cost of eternal life is free; however, you must, I repeat, MUST, repent of your sins, and turn your life completely over to JESUS.
